The creation of the directory
The sustainable freelancer directory began life as a simple Airtable embedded on a page of my own website – which was largely dedicated to topics relating to SEO and PPC (as that is what I do for a living).
Having made the transition towards serving purpose-driven, ethical or eco friendly brands and charities, I felt that it was hard finding paid work in this space.
Not only are you competing against other freelancers who are happy to serve all kinds of clients and industries, but you’re also competing against agencies and other collectives.
I wanted a way of ampifying and supporting any freelancer or consultant that was on the same path as myself – and so I created the sustainable freelancers directory.
Why SustainableFreelancers was setup
I took the decision to create this micro-site specifically to support the cause because I realised that although the page on my personal website was doing a great job, the Airtable itself (which contained all the freelancers details) was invisible to Googlebot. D’oh!
This was due to the technical configuration of Airtable (if you’re curious – they block Googlebot from accessing any of their content when it isn’t embedded on their own airtable.com domain). This had the result of meaning that all the valuable/useful content within the directory wasn’t visible to Google.
This went against my main purpose of creating the directory – I was hoping that it would be visible on Google for searches like “sustainable freelance copywriters” and other such topics.
So, by moving away from Airtable, and putting all the content directly on this SustainableFreelancers website, I can hopefully feature all the freelancers up close and personal without Google being unable to access any of that juicy content. That’s the plan, anyway!
